The Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi) is a centre of expertise and a driving force for integration and diversity in Norway. IMDi is under the authority of the Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion and is charged with implementing integration and diversity policies in the ministry’s areas of responsibility. The aim is to promote equal living standards and diversity through work, integration and participation. The directorate cooperates with municipalities, government agencies, immigrant organizations/groups and the private sector. IMDi was established on January 1st 2006 through a division of the Directorate of Immigration (UDI). After the division, UDI is responsible for migration and immigration, including the running of reception centres for asylum seekers, while IMDi is responsible for persons who have been granted residence permits in Norway, and for other tasks in the field of integration and diversity. IMDi’s most important tasks are settling refugees, contributing to qualifying immigrants for work and education, following up the Introduction Act for Newcomers, contributing to dialogue between the majority population and minorities, acting as a driving force for equality in the public services, being the national authority for interpreting in the public sector, preventing and combating forced marriages, contributing to the development of knowledge in the field of integration and diversity, and functioning as a competence centre. IMDi's administrative duties include administering grant schemes, initiating research and development through grants for projects, providing documentation, information and guidance through web portals, publications, networks etc. IMDi has branch offices in Narvik, Trondheim, Bergen, Kristiansand, Gjøvik and Oslo.
